MATCH RESULTS
A total number of nine matches were played over a three-weekend duration.
Match one; Kings College Old Boys Cricket Club secured a quarter final ticket on Saturday, April 10, by taking Federal Government College Warri CC to the cleaners by a 5- wicket victory. In a business manner, at the Unilag Cricket pitch, the Warri team was dismissed for 35 runs in 16.5 overs. Seye Olympio of KC created the havoc with his 5-wicket haul for 12 runs in 6 overs.
Match two; Rocks CC of Abeokuta defeated Howzat Dolphins by 2 wickets at the TBS cricket oval on Sunday, April 11 to advance to the quarter-final. Dolphins' 151 runs was not enough to stop Rocks. Segun Olayinka of Rocks scored a brilliant 54.
Match three, played at the Unilag cricket pitch on Sunday, April 11, Endurance Ofem of Pioneers' unbeaten 113 runs was enough to secure a semi-final ticket for his team as they defeated debutant, Indo- Nigeria CC by 128 runs. Pioneers amassed 241 runs for 6 wickets.
Match four; Lagos Indians CC defeated Government College Ibadan Old Boys CC by 1 wicket on Monday, April 12, at the TBS cricket oval to secure a place in the semi- final. GCI was bowled out for 127 runs in 30.2 overs. Naresh's 49 not out gave the Lagos Indians the deserved victory.
Match five, Saturday, April 17, Foundation Cricket Club (FCC) defeated Rocks CC of Abeokuta by 6 wickets in the quarter-final at the Tafawa Balewa Cricket Oval. Rocks was bowled out for 66 runs in 22.5 overs. Wale Adeoye took 5 wickets for 21 runs.
Match six; Kings College Old Boys CC qualified for the semi final by humbling division one runner up, Cosmopolitan CC by five wickets. Cosmo's unimpressive 103 runs was not a problem for KCOB CC.
Match seven, first semi final, Sunday, April 18, defending champion, Foundation Cricket Club edged out Lagos Indians by 112 runs at the TBS Oval. FCC amassed 219 runs for 9 wickets in 40 overs while Lagos Indians struggled to put up 107 runs all out in 31.4 overs. Barnaby Ephraim and Femi Oduyebo of FCC scored 40 not out and 46 respectively while Wale Adeoye (FCC) accounted for 4 wickets for 28 runs.
Match eight, second semi final, Howzat Pioneers defeated King College Old Boys CC by 139 runs to qualify for the finals. Pioneers scored 200 runs in 37.3 overs while KCOB CC was all out for 61 runs in 16.5 overs. The match was played at the Unilag Cricket Oval on Sunday, April 18. Endurance Ofem who is in contention for the batsman of the series scored 51runs.
Match nine, finals, April 25, Foundation CC defeated Howzat Pioneers by 7 wickets, thus becoming the tournament champion for the 2004- third edition.
Pioneers collapsed at 110 all out in 25.4 overs Wale Adeoye (FCC) scored 42 runs not out and took 2 for 33 in 7 overs, Femi Oduyebo and Adebajo (FCC) took 3 wickets apiece.
FCC went home with a trophy, Winner's Shield and Cash Prize of N50,000.00 while Howzat Pioneers went away with the Runner Up Shield and Cash Prize of N35,000.00.
Endurance Ofem (Pioneers) was voted Batsman and Cricketer of the series, Seye Olympio (KCOB) was declared Bowler of the series and Chiran (Lagos Indians) was voted Fieldsman of the series. Ademola Onikoyi (Pioneers) was voted Wicket Keeper of the series while Wale Adeoye (FCC) was adjudged Man of the Final Match.
APPRAISAL OF THE TOURNAMENT ORGANISATION
The third edition was a big improvement over the two previous editions as
match venues were better prepared, Officials did their duties without any
controversies, catering and logistic support was well taken care of without
problems.
The tournament sponsor, Express Discount Limited, again added colour to the finals by placing corporate pitch panels around the pitch thus giving the whole grounds a very beautiful look.
The final match was graced by the Honourable Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Lagos State Government, Honourable Opeyemi Bamidele, who was the Special Guest of Honour, Mr. Sanwoolu, Special Adviser to the Deputy Governor of Lagos State on Corporate Matters, Mr. Deji Tinubu, Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Rtd. Lt. Col. Walter Jibunoh (ex Nigeria- International), Prof. Tunde Makanju, Chairman, University of Lagos Sports Council, Mr. Ade Abisogun, Consultant to Iris Smart Technologies Limited, Tokunbo Paul, Regional Manager of MTN Nigeria Limited and a host of other cricket enthusiasts.
